Hiring Interns and Data Analyst

At CSBD, we have been actively recruiting new talent for our organization since 2020. Thus far, our recruitment efforts have led to the addition of a Junior Data Analyst (Feb 2020 – Sep 2021), a Data Analyst Intern (May 2022 – Sep 2022), and a Data Analyst (Sep 2021 – Feb 2023) and a Business Analyst (Power BI) Intern (Aug 2023 – Jan 2024) to our team. The individuals in these positions showcased remarkable skills in managing diverse data analysis responsibilities, encompassing tasks such as data cleaning, manipulation, preprocessing, visualization, statistical modeling, and various health data science and machine learning tasks. They actively engaged in and effectively accomplished numerous projects related to biological and health data during their tenure. Having gained valuable experience at CSBD, they have since embarked on successful careers as analysts and researchers in prestigious organizations across Bangladesh.

Power BI Project

Objectives: The purpose of this dashboard was to analyze the population characteristics and trends of COVID confirmed cases in Ontario, Canada to gain valuable insights from the pandemic.

Methods: Daily COVID-19 confirmed cases data for the province of Ontario, Canada during January 2020 – June 2021 were gathered retrospectively from Esri Canada (https://resources-covid19canada.hub.arcgis.com/), a GIS Hub to share COVID-19 data to report on outbreaks, cases, hospitalizations, and other pandemic-related information nationwide. Data was imported in Power BI and Power Query was used to editing, cleaning, and merging the data. Data Analysis Expression (DAX) functions of Power BI were used to create calculated measures and columns, such as proportion of exposure and case status.

Results: During the study timeframe almost 317K cases were identified in Ontario; 51% were female and 49% were male. The majority of COVID positive cases were young, aged <30 years. The map indicated a higher case counts in the Toronto area. Around 74% of cases were exposed due to close contact while around 3% were travel related. During the study period, around 96.9% of cases were recovered and the recovery rate is bit higher for females and in the year 2020 than in 2021. Proportion of deceased cases was much higher at the beginning of the pandemic, 2020 and especially among males which might be due to the unavailability of COVID vaccines. At the beginning of the year, an increasing trend of case counts was observed, reaching a peak in April then a sharp decrease in May followed by a slight increasing pattern during September to December.
